According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, high blood pressure (HBP) affects about 67 million adults—that’s one in three adults. HBP costs this country billions of dollars, not just from the medical treatment, but from lost productivity.

Left untreated, HBP can contribute to development of heart disease and kidney disease. 

The pharmaceutical approach involves ace inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, and diuretics to reduce blood pressure.

However, for many, the combination of these meds prescribed to control HBP comes up short.  

The pressure in your arterial system is regulated by blood-vessel diameter, heart rate, contractility, and the volume of your blood.

So simply, blood pressure = cardiac output + arterial resistance.

The nervous system regulates blood pressure by changing the diameter of vessels when necessary.

More specifically, the sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate and constricts the vessels, while the parasympathetic nervous system causes the blood vessels to relax.

To balance the activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, the brainstem (medulla) receives information from the blood vessels to help maintain the balance between the constriction and dilation of the vessels. When there is prolonged constriction, high blood pressure results.

Spinal distortion and misalignments are implicated in many health issues, including high blood pressure.

The first vertebra of the spine (C-1) is called the atlas. Unlike all the other spinal vertebra that interlock with each other, the alignment of C-1 relies on muscles and ligaments to maintain its position.

Because it is not interlocked with the rest of the spine, it is prone to misalignment.

Furthermore, a misalignment or subluxation of the Atlas is usually pain-free and, for many, goes undetected and undiagnosed. Going unnoticed, an Atlas subluxation can interfere with normal brainstem nerve pathways that can lead to elevated blood pressure. In fact, the relationship between the upper spine and blood pressure has been known for a long time.

Millions of people benefit from spinal manipulation due to its far-reaching effects on the nervous system and the rest of the body.

Spinal manipulation has proven to be the best treatment for neck and back pain, as well as migraine headaches, and other musculoskeletal conditions, hands down.

However, the benefits of chiropractic manipulation go way beyond pain.

In fact, according the Journal of Human Hypertension, researchers proved chiropractic manipulation to the Atlas vertebra to be a powerful treatment for high blood pressure.

In a randomized, double-blind study, participants were analyzed for misalignment of the Atlas.

Of those in the study with Atlas subluxation, the use of chiropractic manipulation was the only treatment. Those in the study were seen weekly for eight weeks. They were assessed for vital signs and adverse events.

The results:  All the patients in the study had a drop in their systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Important to note from the research, there were NO adverse side effects or events from the manipulation.

This study provides evidence that there are non-drug and safe interventions for the treatment high blood pressure.
